Arnett crash out of CFU Club Shield
New champions will be crowned in this year's staging of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield as defending champions Arnett Gardens crashed out following their 4-1 defeat by AC Port of Spain at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago yesterday.
Needing a win to advance to the knockout rounds, Arnett were far from their usual best as they slumped to a heavy defeat against their Trinidadian opponents.
A brace from Shackiel Henry (24th minute, 77th), an own goal from Joel Jones (64th) and a late strike from Michael Chaves (90th+3) saw Port of Spain taking all three points.
Jones (75th) would get some redemption for his own goal as he bagged Arnett's only goal throughout the game.
Following an even start in the opening minutes, Port of Spain would race to the front as Henry put his team ahead with a well-placed shot from outside the box.
Arnett's day would plummet in the second half, as after a scramble in the box, Jones would inadvertently turned the ball into his own net just past the hour mark.
The Junglists responded soon after, however, this time with Jones finding the right net. A wonder strike off the boot of the defender from distance rocketed into the top corner, beating the Port of Spain goalkeeper for pace.
That would be Arnett's only highlight for the rest of game, as just a minute later, a mistake from goalkeeper Rohain Williams allowed Henry to secure his brace, finishing into an empty net.
Arnett would concede the final goal of the afternoon in time added as, bereft of energy and hope, Chaves was left free to finish into an empty goal.
The result means Arnett have finished third in the group with three points, and outside of the sole qualifying spot in Group D, while Port of Spain moved into the second spot with six points.
With their campaign coming to an end, they have also missed out on qualifying for the Concacaf Caribbean Cup, which leaves Cavalier and Mount Pleasant as Jamaica's only representatives in the competition.
In other games in Group B, Club Franciscain secured the top spot and their place in the knockout round with a close 1-0 win over Scholars International at the Ato Boldon Stadium.
