Man charged after filing false missing person report in car theft scheme
A St Thomas man has been arrested and charged after allegedly filing a false missing person report in an attempt to steal a motor vehicle in St Andrew on Saturday, July 12.
The accused has been identified as 29-year-old Oshane Allen, otherwise called 'Alkaline', of Bath district, St Thomas.
According to the St Thomas Criminal Investigations Branch, Allen had arranged to rent a Toyota Axio motor car from a coworker. He made an initial deposit on the rental cost and agreed to pay the balance at a later date.
However, on the day the payment was due, Allen allegedly told his coworker that a relative who had borrowed the vehicle had gone missing. He then filed a missing person and stolen motor vehicle report at the Morant Bay Police Station.
Investigations later revealed that the photo and identity provided for the supposed missing person were fake.
Police say Allen eventually admitted to giving a false report and led investigators to the vehicle's location, where it was found partially stripped. Missing parts were later recovered by the police.
Allen was formally charged on Tuesday, with creating public mischief and larceny of motor vehicle.
Investigations are ongoing.
