Third monkey on the loose in Stoney Hill captured
The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has confirmed that all three white-faced capuchin monkeys that were on the loose Stony Hill, St Andrew have now been safely captured.
The non-native animals are in quarantine under the supervision of the Veterinary Services Division (VSD) and the Hope Zoo.
NEPA is warning that it is illegal to import animals into Jamaica without the proper clearances from the VSD of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the necessary permits from NEPA. Offenders may be fined up to $5 million under the Natural Resources and Conservation Authority (NRCA) Act.
The Agency, in partnering with the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the VSD, is working to find out where the monkey's escaped and, "will be taking the strongest possible legal action against the person or persons responsible for their importation."
NEPA is reminding every one that these monkeys poses risks to public health and agriculture. Authorities warn that such animals may also disrupt the island's delicate ecosystem and biodiversity.
NEPA is urging the public to report any sightings of non-native wildlife and to avoid handling such animals.
