Sizzla to receive keys to Florida city
In a powerful tribute to reggae legend Sizzla, the city of Lauderhill, Florida, will present him with the Keys to the City--the highest honour a city in the US can bestow.
The occasion will take place on Sunday, August 3, during a special event marking Jamaica's 63rd Independence at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center. The ceremony comes amid Sizzla's yearlong celebration of 30 years in music, an extraordinary milestone for an artiste who has profoundly shaped the global reggae and Rastafari landscape. Known for his timeless anthems such as Solid as a Rock, Thank You Mama, and many more, Sizzla's influence stretches far beyond Jamaica's shores, touching lives with messages of empowerment, consciousness, and spiritual resilience.
Spearheading the honour is Lauderhill's Mayor Denise D. Grant--a proud Jamaican-American born in Christiana, Manchester--who spoke with THE STAR about what the moment signifies for the diaspora and reggae culture worldwide.
"Sizzla Kalonji is a true cultural icon," Grant declared. "His music resonates deeply and positively with audiences worldwide. His artistry breathes life into the soul of reggae music, embodying themes of resilience, empowerment, and spiritual upliftment. Solid as a Rock has been an anthem of perseverance and hope for decades, inspiring countless individuals to triumph over adversity."
"His contributions to reggae and cultural expression are profound, making him a deserving recipient of this honour," Grant added.
Lauderhill is home to a vibrant Jamaican diaspora. Grant emphasised that honouring Sizzla is both an honour and a privilege, not just for the appreciation of his music, but it's a defining moment to celebrate an artiste whose legacy continues to uplift and inspire communities around the globe.
LEGACY OF REGGAE
"This recognition affirms the importance of cultural ambassadors like Sizzla," she said. "And, further underscores my commitment to honouring the roots and legacy of reggae music."
For Grant, presenting the keys to the city holds deep personal meaning.
"As a lifelong admirer of his music--personally and professionally--this is a defining moment for me. Solid as a Rock symbolises divine strength and resilience, reminding us that obstacles can be overcome through faith and perseverance. This ceremony is a way of saying thank you--not just for the music, but for the inspiration."
As a Jamaican-American breaking barriers in the US, Grant sees the gesture as part of a larger mission: preserving and elevating Jamaican culture abroad.
"I carry the pride of my Jamaican heritage everywhere I go," she said. " It is my duty and honour to elevate our culture--through music, food, and tradition--and to be a voice for our community on the global stage. Recognising Sizzla with the keys to the city reflects the significance of reggae and dancehall as powerful symbols of our identity and resilience. It is a testament to Jamaica's enduring influence and our collective ability to inspire change, foster unity, and celebrate our rich cultural tapestry worldwide."
Sizzla will headline the Independence event, delivering a fiery set from his legendary catalogue. Also joining the celebration are Etana, Admiral Tibet, Lady G, Hal Anthony, and music from Foota Hype. The celebration doesn't stop in Lauderhill. On October 19, Sabina Park in Kingston will host a monumental event in honour of Sizzla's 30-year journey. Fans, fellow artistes, and cultural leaders from around the world are expected to gather for a day of music, reflection, and tribute to one of reggae's most enduring voices.
