THE Emancipendence Carnival, which starts tomorrow, Emancipation Day, features two major three-year-old events, Saturday's Jamaica Oaks at 10 furlongs and next Wednesday's Jamaica Derby at 12 furlongs on Independence Day.

On the betting side, a Ketch 9 mandatory payout highlights Saturday's 10-race card, followed by a Reggae 6 mandatory payout on Jamaica Derby Day.

Anthony Nunes' LINGUIST should start favourite to land the fillies-only Jamaica Oaks after her brave second-place run in the 1000 Guineas behind Carl Anderson's BURNING HEDGE, who could possibly start favourite to beat colts and geldings in the Jamaica Derby.

On pedigree and her 1000 Guineas run, rubbing shoulders with outstanding BURNING HEDGE in a two-horse race inside the last furlong, LINGUIST proved herself the second-best filly in the land by finishing six lengths clear of MIGHTY GULLY despite being eased for possibly the last half-furlong by Dick Cardenas.

Bred to get a distance of ground, LINGUIST was sired by the late Don Wehby's Aveenu Malcainu out of the prolific Traditional mare, Electrifying.

Bilingual raced against some of the best horses in her era, losing the 1000 Guineas to Triple Crown winner, two-time Horse of the Year and dual Diamond Mile-winner, She's A Maneater, who also won the Superstakes on three occasions.

Bilingual also placed second in the Jamaica Oaks to Marlene My Love, a half-sister to another Triple Crown winner, Mark My Word.

BURNING HEDGE, who finished third in the 10-furlong St Leger behind I DREAM AGAIN and HANSA, coming from an almost hopeless position, has much to prove being champion two-year-old of last season.

Take a shot at Saturday's Reggae 6 by banking TIGRAY EXPRESS, DREAMER's CORNER and THE REAL IDENTITY, races four through six, after going top heavy in the first three events.
