Ja trio gets last shot at Diamond League finale
Olympic bronze medallist Rasheed Broadbell, up-and-coming sprinter Tina Clayton and 400m hurdler Roshawn Clarke will get their final shot at claiming a lane for the September 13-14 Brussels Diamond League finals, when they compete at the 14th Weltklasse Zurich League track and field athletics meeting in Switzerland on Thursday.
This week's meet is the last of the regular Wanda Diamond League series, and Broadbell, who took third in the men's 110m hurdles in Paris, currently sits in 10th spot and will be looking to earn enough points to move into the top eight and secure a place in the Brussels finale.
Broadbell had been battling injuries prior to the Olympics, but has been in great form since and defeated Olympic champion Grant Holloway of the United States at the Lausanne Diamond League meeting last month.
Days later, the placings were reversed with Holloway upstaging Broadbell. Both will renew rivalry in Zurich, where Jamaica's former Olympic champion Hansle Parchment will be in the line-up along with Olympic silver medallist, the United States' Daniel Roberts.
Parchment has already booked his spot in the Brussels finale.
At this point, Clayton, who is in her Wanda Diamond League debut season, is in a better position that Broadbell, as she is currently holding down the eighth and final spot for a run in the women's 100 metres finale, with 12 points..
A finalist on Olympic debut in Paris, Clayton registered her first Diamond League success at the Silesia meeting a week ago, where she was involved in a close finish with veteran sprinter Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith of Cote d'Ivoire. Both were credited with the same time, a wind-aided 10.83 seconds,
On Thursday, Clayton will again line up with Ta Lou-Smith, and the respective gold and silver medallists from the Paris Olympics, Julien Alfred of St. Lucia and Sha'Carri Richardson of the United States. The latter have been the two fastest females this season with 10.72 and 10.71, respectively. Both will be making their first appearances since the Olympics.
Also in the line-up is Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith, who is coming off a win at the Lausanne Diamond League, where she posted a season-best 10.88 seconds.
Roshawn Clarke, who races in the men's 400m hurdles, is the other Jamaican chasing a spot in the mid-September finale. He currently holds down ninth place on 12 points. Among others, he will face Norway's Karsten Warholm and Brazilian Alison dos Santos, who were second and third, respectively, in Paris.
In the women's 400 metres hurdles, there are four Jamaicans entered, all of whom have already booked their spot in the Diamond League final, Rushell Clayton, Andrenette Knight, Janieve Russell and Olympic Games finalist Shiann Salmon.
In Zurich, they will have for company the United States' Anna Cockrell, the surprise Paris Olympics silver medallist.
World champion Danielle Williams will be the only Jamaican in the women's 100m hurdles. She posted a season best of 12.37 to place third in Silesia, and in Zurich she will face Jasmine Camacho Quinn of Puerto Rico, the Olympic bronze medallist, Olympic champion Masai Russell of the United States, and her countrywoman Grace Stark, a finalist in Paris.
Other Jamaicans down to compete at the Weltklasse meet are Wayne Pinnock, Tajay Gayle and Carey McLeod in the men's long jump, which includes Olympic gold medallist Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece; Lamara Distin in the women's high jump, and Rajindra Campbell, the Olympic Games' shot put bronze medallist.
