Aussies crush WI in second T20I
It was a day that should have been a jubilant farewell for Jamaican Andre Russell, but Australia played party spoilers as they delivered a dominant performance to secure an emphatic eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in the second T20 International (T20I) at Sabina Park last night.
The Aussies were resolute as they chased down a target of 173 with 28 balls to spare.
After being inserted once again, the Windies posted 172-8 in their 20 overs, with opener Brandon King top-scoring with a brisk 51 off 36 balls. However, the innings lacked consistency as wickets fell at regular intervals.
The retiring Russell provided a late surge with a fiery 36 off just 15 balls, including four sixes.
Russell made it clear that he was nervous playing in his final game for the Maroons, however, he was glad that he was able to play one last game in front of his home fans.
"You know, this is a dream. When I was a kid, I dreamt about playing here and it became a reality. It shows that anything is possible with hard work, and I just want to say thanks to all the fans who came out to support me for such a wonderful international career. I really appreciate you guys."
In addition to Russell's foray, lower order batter Gudakesh Motie, with 18 not out off nine balls, added some valuable runs.
For Australia, leg-spinner Adam Zampa was the pick of the bowlers with 3-29. Nathan Ellis with 2-34 and Glenn Maxwell, 2-15, also made key contributions.
In reply, Australia made light work of the target, reaching 173-2 in just 15.2 overs. Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis starred with an explosive unbeaten 78 off 33 balls, smashing seven fours and five sixes. Cameron Green provided excellent support with a rapid 56 not out off 32, as the pair put on an unbroken 131-run stand to seal the win.
Earlier, Mitchell Marsh 21 off 17 and Maxwell 12 off 10 provided a quick start before falling to Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph, but the chase never looked in doubt.
With this comprehensive win, Australia have taken a 2-0 lead in the series with the teams now moving to St Kitts for the third match on Friday.
