5K to be added to Reggae Half Marathon
The 5K is to be included in the Half Marathon and the 10K, according to the event's race director, Alfred 'Frano' Francis, announced after Sunday's successful staging in Negril, Westmoreland.
"For 2024, a 5K race will be added to the programme. This decision was made in response to the demands of the thousands of 5K runners who want to participate in the internationally recognised event.
"After cutting the full marathon in 2023, the addition of the new event will provide for a more inclusive event," said Francis.
On Sunday, Kemar Leslie dominated the men's half marathon, winning easily in 1:15.42 hours. Winthrope Wellington took second in 1:19.34, while Winston Dehaney ended third in 1:21.00.
It was a comprehensive win for Rosamund Ponder in the women's category, as she crossed the finish line in 1:27.59 hours, as Nadine Allenspach, with 1:39.09, and Karolina Romanska, with 1:40.45, finished second and third, respectively.
In the women's 10K, Holmwood Technical High School's Cindy Rose was first, clocking 41.11 minutes to hold off Britney Bruce of Bellefield High, who did 41:18, with Rose's teammate Florence Nafamba third in 42:52.
With six of their athletes finishing in the top 10, the Dave Anderson-coached Holmwood captured the team event's top prize for high-school girls, ahead of St Jago High and Bellefield High.
Garfield Gordon of UCT Steppers continued his fine form on the road racing circuit, as he won the men's 10K after stopping the clock at 33:04 minutes, ahead of Dwayne Graham of Highgate, with 34:13, and Jamaica College's (JC) 15-year-old schoolboy, Dominic Amponsah, who was third in 34:35.
JC captured the high-school boys' team title ahead of St Jago High and Bellefield High.
