St Mirren Football Club manager Stephen Robinson said the signing of Jalmaro Calvin came about after the prolific striker caught their attention while they were scouting defender Richard King.

Calvin penned a two-year contract with the Scottish Premiership club that will see him staying with St Mirren through to the summer of 2027, with the option to extend for another year.

He will reunite with teammate Richard King as the duo were key members in Cavalier's back-to-back title wins in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL).

In fact, King's presence played a key role in Calvin's move to St Mirren as Robinson explained that the club was scouting the defender when they took notice of Calvin's pedigree in front of goal.

With the club's already existing connection with Cavalier, the agreement to sign Calvin was completed in short order.

"Jalmaro was a player that kept coming up every time we looked at Richard," Robinson said.

"We've built up a really good relationship with Cavalier and their owner, Rudolph Speid."

Calvin, who is a dual Caribbean international, having represented both Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda, is coming off one of his most prolific seasons to date.

The striker bagged 21 goals to lead Cavalier to the title and finished second in the JPL golden boot race behind Arnett Gardens' Warner Brown.

Robinson sees Calvin's signing as a needed boost to his team's attack as he said the player's pace and eye for goal would be an asset to their squad.

He, however, said the main priority will be to get him settled in with the club and familiar with Scottish football.

"Jalmaro has real pace and energy. He can play wide and he can play through the middle," Robinson explained.

"We need to build him up. He's a project for us in terms of getting him used to the Scottish game and the physicality, but his electric pace will give us something that we don't have in the squad at this time."

Calvin will wear the number 17 during his time with the club, who are currently in the middle of the Premier Sports Cup.

They are drawn in Group D, alongside Ayr United, Arbroath, Forfar Athletic, and Annan Athletic.
