Holmwood’s Ricketts dreams big
Jada Ricketts hopes to play a more crucial role in helping Holmwood win their 13th ISSA Rural Senior schoolgirls netball title after they failed last year to reach the final for the first time in several years.
The 17-year-old Ricketts has been a top player for Holmwood, who have been pulverising all their opponents this season.
Ricketts, a member of the national under-21 development squad, is not only thinking about success at Holmwood but also excelling at the higher stage.
"I have been playing netball for Holmwood Technical for five years, as I started playing for the school when I was in grade 7," said Ricketts, who was introduced to the sport while being a student at Bethabara Primary School in Newport, Manchester.
Ricketts' love lies in the goal attack position, despite playing wing attack and goal shooter.
"I love playing as a goal attack as it allows me to give my team more support going forward, as this is crucial in a game situation in which the objective is to get the ball as quickly as possible inside the circle to score regularly," she shared.
According to Ricketts, Holmwood, who have dominated the competition over the years, have a target to achieve this year.
"Last year, we failed to reach the final of the competition and coming into the new season, we had a target to get back our title, and I think we will achieve this as we are pushing ourselves every time we take the court and we see the results," she said.
Ricketts dreams of playing for the national senior team, and being a member of the under-21 development squad, she believes, places her on the path while she hopes that with proper support, she will attain her goals.
"I love playing the sport, and since doing so, my dream has always been to play at the highest level, representing my country. Being a member of the national under-21 development squad is the first step for me in the right direction, and I really want to make an impact here for that transition.
"I am extremely happy for the support I have gotten over the years from team members, school, coach and fans, and I want to make everyone happy and proud by winning both the Rural Senior and All Island titles this year," she said.
