Central Champs starts today
AFTER brilliant performances over the past weekend, it will be action once again for the next two days for high school athletes as the Central Athletics Championships take place at the GC Foster College in St Catherine today at 8:30 a.m.
The meet starts with the Open Girlsâ 3000m final.
Forty-seven finals are down to take place today, 24 among the girls, with 16 on the track and eight in the field. There will be 23 boys finals, with 16 on the track and seven in the field.
Defending girls champions Edwin Allen High School, after winning the team title for the past 10 years, will be expected to be strongly challenged from a dangerous Hydel High while St Jago High School, Holmwood Technical, and a strong emerging St Catherine High School could all make it very competitive.
But Edwin Allen coach Michael Dyke has other priorities.
âThis is not our main focus, especially immediately following Carifta Trials,â Dyke told STAR Sports. âWe are going there to participate nevertheless, but it is very challenging at this time under the circumstances.â
One of the key events today is the Class One Girls 100m, as Hydel High Schoolâs Brianna Lyston could face Edwin Allenâs twin sisters Tia and Tina Clayton. All three are coming off brilliant performances from the weekend at the Carifta Trials where Lyston clocked 22.66 seconds to win the Under-20 girlsâ 200m, while Tia clocked 11.49 to win the 100m ahead of her sister, who finished second in 11.50.
On the boys side, it should be another canter for St Jago, as they have never lost this title, and with them eyeing a top-three finish at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girlsâ Athletics Championships next month, they should be out in large numbers.
