Cameron predicts sub-40 St Jago time in red-hot Gibson 4x1
THE CLASS ONE Boys' 4x100m relay - one of 15 Championships events on the programme - is expected to sizzle at Saturday's Gibson McCook Relays, with four schools having an outstanding chance to win at the event to be staged at the National Stadium in Kingston.
St Jago High, Jamaica College (JC), Kingston College (KC), and Calabar High are primed for a battle royal in the run for gold, with the possibility of St Catherine High and Edwin Allen High adding to the drama.
Having clocked 40.57 to win at the Camperdown Classics, the Bert Cameron-conditioned St Jago, from Monk Street in Spanish Town, has the fastest time in the event this season. But they had to work overtime, being involved in a close fight all the way with JC and Calabar, before their anchor-leg man made the difference. Jamaica College and Calabar finished second and third, respectively, in 40.95 and 40.98.
Underlining their credentials as favourites, in a recent interview with The Gleaner, Cameron said that his quartet of Andre Harris, Gregory Prince, Deshaun Gordon, and Jahvel Glanville can go much faster.
"The guys were just warming up at the Camperdown Classics, and they can go much faster and sub-40 seconds is in the making," said Cameron, the former Olympian and 400m World Champion.
With Christopher Scott, Hector Benjamin, and Dwight Downer, JC possess the ammunition to go much faster, likewise the Calabar team, which is led by Dishaun Lamb, Mark Manley, and David Lynch.
And though clocking 41.27 seconds to win at Western Relays, KC has a very experienced group that cannot be taken lightly. Adrian Kerr, Tajae Francis, and Nkrumie Bouwahjie will want to ensure that the defending champions retain their title after their close win over Calabar and JC in 2020. All three were members of KC's winning team at the ISSA Boys and Girl's Championship last year, and they will be banking on experience.
Looking to spoil the party and capture their first Gibson McCook Relays title are schools led by the two fastest schoolboys, Bryan Levell of Edwin Allen High and St Catherine High's Sandray Davison. At Camperdown Classics, St Catherine High won their heat in 40.91 seconds to be the second-fastest team this season, while Edwin Allen clocked 41.47 seconds at the same meet.
Any number can play in this event, which projects a bang-up finish.
Calabar High's record of 39.32 seconds, set in 2015, will not be trouble, but an exciting contest is in the making. However, it could take sub-40 seconds to win.
