July 24, 2025

Carita Williams-Lindsay was named Employee of the Year at Bellevue Hospital during a spirited celebration held last Friday at Oo Park on the hospital grounds.

Selected from more than 25 standout nominees, Lindsay was recognised not only for her professional excellence, but also for her tireless dedication to staff development and morale.

Crystal Davis, registered nurse, and Sandra Buckley, assistant dietitian, were first and second runners-up, respectively.

The People's Choice Award, which allowed staff to vote for the colleague who best represents the spirit of Bellevue, went to Sheryl Dunbar-Simmonds, a patient care assistant.

Bellevue Hospital is Jamaica's sole public psychiatric medical institution.

Meanwhile, Lindsay, widely admired throughout the institution for her leadership and mentorship, said the award represented a long-held personal goal finally realised.

"This award affirms that hard work, consistency, and a heart for service do not go unnoticed," she said. "Even behind the scenes, we are part of the patient care journey."

She has announced plans to spearhead a mental wellness support programme for staff. This, she said, includes creating safe spaces for staff to explore emotional well-being, manage stress, and prevent burnout.

"We're a mental health institution, but we must also care for our own minds," Lindsay said. "Recognition is beautiful, but real change comes when every team member feels supported, seen, and empowered."

The hospital's CEO, Suzette Buchanan, emphasised the importance of recognition in nurturing a committed and resilient workforce.

"Our staff give so much of themselves every day," she said.

"This event is our way of saying, we see you, we value you, and your work makes a difference. When people feel appreciated, they are empowered to keep showing up with excellence, and that is what keeps our institution strong."
