Burn victim needs life-saving treatment - Family appeals for help to take her overseas

Kerry Ann Collins is in dire need of US$773,000 (approximately J$113 million) to travel abroad for life-saving treatment at Jackson Memorial Hospital in the US after receiving burns to more than 80 per cent of her body in an accident at her home on November 27.
Her sister, Fellecia Collins, told THE WEEKEND STAR that Kerry Ann is currently at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) and needs to leave the island quickly for specialised treatment at the burn-care facility.
鈥淪he is fighting to live and the doctors at KPH are fighting with her too, but the problem is that we don鈥檛 really have a burn unit here so they recommend that she goes to Jackson Memorial Hospital for extensive treatment and the cost for that is way above our reach,鈥 Fellecia said.
Disaster struck
She added that Kerry-Ann, 23, a resident of Kingston 11, has been in and out of consciousness.
Recalling the day that altered the course of Kerry Ann鈥檚 life, Fellecia said that her sister went to the kitchen to prepare something to eat. However, she did not realise that she turned on the gas stove and did not light the burner instantly. Kerry Ann reportedly left the kitchen for a brief while and returned. Then disaster struck.
鈥淪he then returned to the stove and strike the match and it blow up and she was caught on fire. My mom threw water on her to put her out after which she was rushed to the hospital. She is in need of plastic surgery, skin graphing and special covering for her skin to prevent infection,鈥 Fellecia said.
鈥淭he only place she has skin is on her face. The skin on the rest of her entire body has burned off and that leaves her open to a lot of infection. More than 80 per cent of her body is burned. She is aware of what happened to her so it makes her really sad, in addition to the pain that she is feeling,鈥 Fellecia said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just a pity she didn鈥檛 just turn off back the stove and opened the window to let the fumes out.鈥
鈥淚 am asking for assistance for her, please. She is a brilliant young lady and has her entire life ahead of her. We are really appreciative of all the prayers and well-wishes, and no matter how small the contributions are , we are grateful,鈥 Fellecia said.
