‘Father God, thanks’ - Popular PNP radio caller loses leg in crash
"It could have been worse!" That is the frame of mind that 47-year-old of John Polack is in after an accident on Hope Road last Monday caused his right leg to be amputated.
" I just finished listening to the BBC news on RJR, and was going out to get The Gleaner. When I go through the headquarters (of the People's National Party) gate, I saw two vehicles coming at breathtaking speed. I jump up on the little landing at the sidewalk, and by time I jump up there, the car come cross mi and mash up the wall, and go right inna mi ankle, bruk mi ankle; just the skin hitch on pon it," he said
Polack said he was taken to hospital by the driver of the vehicle, where his leg was amputated. "Him (the driver) spent some time there, but because mi injure him couldn't get fi see mi. Excellent man, mi nah gi him no bad name, because mi hear seh him stay until mi go in to theatre," he said.
"The doctor look at mi leg and seh dem cya save it, even if dem pin it, the bottom part nah go have no use because the tendons inna it mash up, so they had to amputate it," he said.
And although it has only been a week since he lost his leg, Polack remains optimistic.
"It is devastating but because of my Christian faith, I've been able to hold on so far. I've cried. But when I cry now, I say, 'Father God, give thanks'," he said
Polack, who's a staunch PNP supporter, said he has been receiving support from the party.
"I've received visits from the Comrade leader [Dr Peter Phillips], Peter Bunting, the general secretary [Julian Robinson], and the media fraternity," he said
"The support has been overwhelming from my biological family, mi political family, and mi church family. God has been good to me, we could have been planning my funeral," he added.
