Cancelled graduation angers parents

June 26, 2019

While some parents are busy making preparations for their children's graduation, those of Grade Six students at the St George's Girls Primary and Infant School in Kingston are feeling left out.

They told THE STAR that they were informed in a meeting last month that the school would not be having its annual graduation.

"We the parents thought it (the meeting) was to brief us about graduation. At that time the principal told us that it was the school's decision that they would not have any graduation based on the behaviour of the students," said one parent

She said that while it is understood that graduation is a privilege, it shouldn't be a case where all the students are being denied.

Teach them a lesson

"What the principal was saying was that they had to teach them a lesson going into high school. But we're saying, what about the ones who have behaved, what is the lesson to them? We're saying if it is 10 (behaving well), graduate the 10," she said.

Another parent is upset that the school did not consult them before making this decision.

"When they called the meeting, they said is the board that made the decision when the board found out how they (the students) behaved. But the board cannot make that decision without consulting the parents. I think it should be a wholesome decision, with parents and board," he said

Meanwhile one parent told THE STAR that her daughter has been attending the institution from the infant level, and this would have been her first graduation.

"She pass her PEP exam, and no graduation, no picture, nothing at all. Mi feel bad because her shoes dem come down from foreign fi she graduate inna, because a sneakers dem graduate in. There's no graduation. Mi get her skirt mek, there's no graduation. Mi clothes come fi di graduation, there's no graduation," she said

When THE STAR contacted the school, the principal refused to comment, citing that it was the board's decision.
