‘The perfect move’ - Reggae Boy Malik Mothersille excited at Stockport County transfer
Having recently completed his move to English Football League (EFL) League One club Stockport County, Reggae Boy Malik Mothersille described the transfer as the perfect move for his career.
Mothersille completed his move to Stockport County from fellow League One club Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee, which is reported to exceed Stockport's previous transfer record of PS800,000.
Mothersille said he decided to make the move having played against Stockport County last year, and believes they are the right fit for his career.
"I'm very excited to join a team that is on the up and has got so much to offer in the future. I'm just excited to get going," he said.
"When I sat down with some of the staff and the gaffer and spoke with them and really thought about it, I really felt like this move was perfect for me.
"Envisioning myself in the team, I'm confident that we can do something special this year," he added.
Mothersille earned the move off the back of an impressive season with Peterborough, where he scored six goals along with 10 assists in 57 appearances.
Dave Challinor, Stockport's manager, said it was important for the club to capture Mothersille's signature, after narrowly missing out on promotion to the EFL Championship last season.
Stockport had placed third in the league standings, just outside automatic promotion places, and were narrowly defeated by Leyton Orient in the semi-finals of the promotion play-offs on penalties.
"He was a player that was on our list, but we thought that not reaching the Championship last season may have scuppered any hopes we had. This represents a big investment from the club into what we feel is one of the brightest prospects in the EFL," Challinor said.
The manager believes that, given his age and talent, Mothersille will prove an important player for the club, and he is looking to see him immediately integrated into the squad and his plans.
"At 21, he has huge potential and we are delighted that he's chosen us to be the next step in his career. It's important we get him integrated as quickly as possible and amongst the group, to give him the best chance to show the best version of himself from day one."
Mothersille, who came through the Chelsea academy, made his Reggae Boyz debut earlier this year against Nigeria in the Unity Cup.
However, despite being listed in the initial 60-man preliminary squad for the Concacaf Gold Cup, Mothersille was not included in the final 26-man roster.
