Arnett contented with victory over Vere
Arnett Gardens' assistant coach Fabian Taylor says even though they won, his team could have done better than their 2-0 win over Vere Phoenix in their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) football match at Montego Bay Sports Complex yesterday.
Goals by Fabian Reid in the second minute and Warner Brown in the 86th made the difference, as Arnett bounced back from a 3-0 setback, against Portmore United, for using an ineligible player in their last matchup, on Thursday. Arnett Gardens used a player who should have sat out the Portmore United game, after tabulating five yellow cards. The league annulled the 0-0 result and awarded Portmore the win with a three-goal margin.
"Very good three points away, but we didn't play as well as we should. Knowing that we lost all three points in the boardroom, we came to do a job and the boys did it," said Taylor, the former Reggae Boyz striker.
"We have 13 games to go. It is a very long season. Our thing is to manage the players as best as possible going forward," added Taylor.
It was a case where one team redeemed themselves versus one who continued to have a season-long nightmare.
Arnett wrapped up their 17th win in 27 matches, and moved to 55 points, seven behind league leaders Mount Pleasant Football Academy.
Vere Phoenix, in the meantime stayed second from bottom on 19 points, one more than bottom-placed Humble Lions.
In a lacklustre match, Arnett Gardens were the early aggressors and took full advantage courtesy of Reid in the second minute. In the latter stages, Brown netted in the 86th minute to cement the win.
The coach of Vere United, Lenworth Hyde said despite their struggles, it is not the end of the road.
"For both ends of the pitch, it hurt us. We just have to wheel and come again. We just have to continue working, get the players to believe that this is not the end of the road. We have 13 games left, we just have to continue to work hard and hope we can get some victories out of them," Hyde said.
"We looked a little better tonight, but we gave up a goal in two minutes of play, and that is unacceptable. That was the setback, and we tried to get back into the game, we tried and made some changes, to lift the spirit of the players. However, we gave up a goal near the last minute of play," he added.
FEATURE GAME
In the feature game of yesterday's doubleheader, Mount Pleasant drew 1-1 with Montego Bay United FC.
Mount Pleasant took the lead at the 31st minute courtesy of an own goal by MoBay United's Odane Nish.
However, the home team would take a share of the points when Johan Weatherley scored at the 48th minute.
Mount Pleasant were reduced to 10 players, on the brink of halftime, when Jashaun Anglin was given marching orders for yellow cards accumulated at the 36th minute and added time.
MoBay United remained third on 50 points.
