Glenmuir, KC in big Champions Cup clash

November 21, 2024

Glenmuir High School will begin their ISSA Champions Cup title defence on Saturday against Kingston College (KC) at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall, St James, following Monday night's draw at the Digicel headquarters in downtown Kingston.

The competition will kick-off with a doubleheader on Friday, and another doubleheader on Saturday, with all matches scheduled for Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Having secured their first hold of the Champions Cup last year, Glenmuir's assistant coach Jhanoy Chambers said the team will enter the 6:15 p.m. fixture with the pride and title of defending champions.

"We will take a lot of pride going into this match because this is something we have been working for, and when you work hard for something and achieve it, then it's a really good feeling," Chambers said.

"Going into this game against Kingston College we know it's going to be a tough one. We're close with the members of the Kingston College coaching staff so we expect a really good game and, hopefully, at the end of the day we will come out with the victory," he added.

The match will be a repeat of last year's semi-finals, where the two teams played out a 1-1 draw in regulation time, before Glenmuir clipped KC 5-4 on penalties.

The Vassell Reynolds-led KC unit will be hoping to gain their third hold on the trophy. Their last Champions Cup title came in 2019 when they had edged Clarendon College 1-0 in the final.

In another repeat of a fixture from last season, Hydel were drawn against Garvey Maceo in the Champions Cup first round for the second season in a row. They will play Saturday's opening game.

The other matchups will take place on Friday.

Hydel, last season Manning Cup beaten finalists, got the better of Garvey Maceo in their last outing, running out 4-2 victors on the day.

Garvey Maceo will also be looking to return to winning ways after their 2-0 defeat to Ocho Rios High in the daCosta Cup in their last outing.

In another Champions Cup rematch, McGrath High will be hoping to banish memories of 2019 when they take on Jamaica College (JC). McGrath were humbled 7-0 by the boys from Old Hope Road in that fixture, and will seek to avoid such a defeat yet again.

For JC, they will hope to maintain their unbeaten streak this season, with a spot in the Champions Cup semi-finals on the line.

Debutantes St Catherine High will test their mettle against Ocho Rios High, who are making their return to the competitions since their first, and to date only appearance, back in 2016.

Ocho Rios will be hoping to create even more history this season as they have already secured their first ever appearance in the daCosta Cup semi-finals.
