Late goal lifts Maldon to second
A LATE goal by Kevin Hawthorne lifted Maldon High School to a 1-0 win over Irwin High in their Zone A football match of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup competition at Irwin High playing field in St James yesterday.
Maldon wasted many scoring chances early, but just when many fans thought the game would end 0-0 they got their reward as Hawthorne struck the winner in the 90th minute.
Dillan Thelwell, coach of Maldon High said good planning allowed his team to win.
"Based on our previous game with them, we knew their strengths and weaknesses. We tried to work mentally with the guys to see if they could stay focused for the 90 minutes. Once we carried out the instructions I know that we can get three points from each game," Thelwell said.
"As for the late goal, it was composure. Players have to understand when you are one on one with the keeper, just try to relax and be composed to pick that spot, just to get the goal. It was a job well done from the boys," he added.
Maldon remain second in the zone with 12 points and a superior goal difference over Green Pond High, who are also on 12 points.
Cornwall College are atop with 21 points and remain undefeated in the zone, with seven wins to their credit. Irwin are fourth with six points.
Maldon created better chances and moved the ball more proficiently through out the game.
Irwin fought hard and played a more defensive game. Disappointment was shown on the faces of their supporters who came out.
"With this loss the chance has dimmed for the team. Nevertheless, I have faith in this fresh set of boys," Norman Foster, coach of Irwin High School, said. "I lost all my players from last year. This is a young team who I see the future in them moving forward. Today's game showed a bit of improvement, even though they have been down this season."
