Late goal seals Munro win
Munro College extended their unbeaten run as a late goal from Antwone Smith led them to a 3-2 win over Maggotty High in their Zone E ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football match at Munro College yesterday.
Due to poor weather conditions, the game was reduced to 80 minutes. Also, many matches were not played because heavy rainfall rendered pitches unplayable.
Antwone Smith opened the scoring for the winners in the 24th minute, and finished off the scoring in 80+5 minutes. Maggotty's Orane Myers scored first to give his team hope, followed by his teammate Ozwayne Miller, who put them ahead in the 55th minute. Roshane Wint had drawn Munro level in the 66th minute, with a goal from the penalty spot.
Kemar Ricketts, coach of Munro College, said the team's quest is to stay on top of the zone.
"I told the boys we need to get the three points so we can continue our quest to top the zone going into the second round. It is a game by game basis. We're taking one step at a time. We want to take it in stride and continue to get our three points moving forward," Ricketts said.
"The weather conditions made it a difficult game. You wouldn't have gotten everything you would have trained for, but the boys were humble and executed well," he added.
Munro remain atop Zone E with 13 points. Maggotty remain third on seven points, the same as B.B. Coke High who hold a five-goal difference.
Xavier Hendricks, coach of Maggotty, said it was an emotional loss.
"The players came here expecting to get something out of the game, but it was just an unfortunate situation. It is a very emotional moment. It is an important thing to show that they want it and are willing to go as far as possible this year," he said.
The heartbreak loss for Maggotty saw players tearing up and screaming at each other.
Hendricks said that, "Overall, it was a good game, and we know it would be a test coming up here in this weather condition. Most of the players are not used to it."
The wet, slippery and cold conditions made it difficult to play with ease.
In a game that could have gone either way, Munro created better chances and exhibited good ball movement in the first half.
For the second half, Maggotty applied pressure to make the game more balanced.
On Saturday, Munro will face Lacovia at Munro, B.B. Coke will face Newell at B.B. Coke and Maggotty will travel to face STETHS.
