National 400 metres representative Roneisha McGregor has started preparing for the upcoming track and field season. She was absent from the athletic calendar last year.

McGregor, who participated last Sunday at the CB UWI 5K at The University of the West Indies, failed to disclose the specific reason for her absence but anticipates a quick return to form, which would facilitate her Olympic Games participation in Paris next year.

"Last season, because of issues, I was absent from the sport. I am happy to start my training for the upcoming season. I missed competing the past season, as track and field is a part of my whole life, and competing in the CB UWI 5K is part of my background preparation.

"This is my second 5K for the season as, being a past awardee of the UWI scholarship, I just have to come out and show my appreciation," said the former Hydel High School representative.

The 26-year-old McGregor was a part of the team that helped Jamaican win a bronze medal in the women's 4x400 metres at the Tokyo Olympic Games three years ago. She was also a part of the Doha 2019 World Championships 4x400 mixed relay team that won silver, and the team that won gold at the World Indoor Championships in the 4x400 metres last year in Belgrade, Serbia.

On Sunday, she finished third in the women's section of the CB UWI 5K.

According to McGregor, she could have participated last season but wanted to be able to perform at her maximum and was not comfortable with her progress.

"I was 60 per cent ready last season, but I was not prepared to compete unless I was 100 per cent ready. I was so disappointed not able to compete, as I didn't even watch the World Championships," she said.

McGregor has a personal best of 50.02 seconds in the one-lap event and was a semi-finalist at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
