Former champions and favourites Holmwood Technical High suffered a big blow ahead of second-round action in the ISSA Rural Senior schoolgirls netball competition, as they will be without vice-captain and goal attack Jessica Chaplain.

The Carline Graham-Powell-coached Holmwood have been ruthless in the preliminary round, scoring lopsided wins over their opponents, with Chaplain being one of their top players.

Chaplain, a national Under-21 development squad member, broke her arm recently in a training session and is out for the remainder of the season. Graham-Powell is, however, confident that Holmwood will still win the title.

"The team will not be affected, because we have a strong bench and the bench players are ready and waiting for the opportunity to shine," a confident Graham-Powell said.

The second round begins Friday, and the 12-time champions, Holmwood, will open their account at Manning's School netball court at noon when they go up against Montego Bay High.

Last year's beaten finalists, Manchester High, will start their second-round campaign against Cambridge High at St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) at noon in the first game of a double-header. In the second game at 1 p.m., May Day High will go against Mile Gully High.

Other Senior matches on the day are Manning's squaring off with Herbert Morrison Technical at 11:30 a.m. at Montego Bay Boys and Girls' Club; Guy's Hill High tackling Titchfield High at Queen's High at 12:30 p.m., before Dinthill Technical oppose Morant Bay High at 1:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, defending and All-Island Junior champions Holmwood will play Green Pond High in Junior action at 11 a.m. at Manning's High.

In other Junior matches, at STETHS at 10 a.m., Mile Gully High will face Manchester High; Cambridge High meet May Day High at 11 a.m.; Mt Alvernia High meet Herbert Morrison Technical at Montego Bay Boys and Girl's Club at 10:30 a.m.; Charlemont High meet Yallahs High at Queen's at 10:30 a.m., and Dinthill take on Titchfield High at 11:30 a.m.

In the second round, the teams have been divided into four groups, with the respective winners and runners-up advancing to the quarter-finals slated for November 30.
