Kellian Hunter is relishing her future in netball after being recently named to the national under-21 development programme and helping St Catherine High capture the Corporate Area ISSA Under-19 schoolgirls netball competition last year.

The lanky 18-year-old was pivotal to St Catherine's success, spearheading them to get by former champions Gaynstead High in the final by scoring 22 goals in 28 attempts in their 26-23 victory.

According to Hunter, she is incentivised by the call-up to the national development programme; and with the continuous support of family members, coaches and friends, hopes to excel at the sport she loves dearly.

"I want to continue playing the sport in the future and have been really motivated by being included recently in the national under-21 developmental programme," Hunter said.

The upper-sixth-form student regards St Catherine's victory as her most cherished accomplishment in the sport, which she only started playing on her entry to the 75-year-old institution.

"I did not play netball before entering St Catherine High and showed interest in grade seven, and I actually went to the coach and told her I wanted to play the sport.

"Most definitely, winning the title with my team last year and being named the best goal shooter in the competition are my biggest achievements so far," Hunter said.

She stated that it was a surreal moment for her when St Catherine won the title last year.

"Winning the competition last year was a wonderful feeling, as the team really worked hard to achieve this. Support from the school had been good before winning. This helped the team in accomplishing that feat," she said.

Hunter is devoted to playing goal shooter and, last Friday, aided St Catherine High to a 41-32 home victory against Spanish Town neighbours, St Jago High.

"I really love my goal-shooting position. Seeing the ball going through the hoop gives me goose pimples. I will never give up this position for any other role," she said.
