Tough heat draw for Thompson Herah
The first round of the women's 100 metres will be one of the events taking centre stage on today's opening day of the National Senior and Junior Track and Field Championships (Trials) at the National Stadium.
Scheduled to get under way at 7:40 p.m., the event will be an acid test for double Olympic Games champion Elaine Thompson Herah, following her below-par opening season 11.24 seconds two weeks ago.
Thompson Herah will run out of lane four in the competitive heat four. She will be up against Tina Clayton, Ashanti Moore and Kemba Nelson, who was second in the event one year ago.
Defending champion Shericka Jackson will be in the first heat, where she will come out of lane four and pitted against Briana Williams of Titans International Track and Field Club and Jonielle Smith of Maximising Velocity and Power (MVP) Track and Field Club.
National junior record holder and the second fastest Jamaican woman this season with 10.92 seconds, Alana Reid, run in lane four of heat two, with Tia Clayton, Kiara Grant - who has also gone sub-11 seconds with a best of 10.99 seconds - and Remona Burchell.
In a late development, former Edwin Allen High's athlete Serena Cole, now at MVP and originally entered for the juniors, will compete with the seniors instead and run from lane six in heat three. Her former teammate at Edwin Allen, Kevona Davis, will start in lane four, while Natasha Morrison will come out of lane three.
The top three finishers from each heat and the four fastest losers will advance to tomorrow's semi-finals.
