Holmwood’s Williams working for ‘special’ Champs
Holmwood Technical High School's Cedricka Williams is ready to become the Class I girls' discus standard bearer at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships (Champs) between March 28-April 1 at the National Stadium.
Williams, the record holder of the event at Classes II and III, is on course to break the Class I record of 53.04 metres, set by Edwin Allen's Fiona Richards in 2017. Yesterday, she dismantled the Central Athletics Championships record of 53.91 she established last year with 54.01.
According to Williams, she will continue to work hard in training, seeking a memorable performance at Champs in pursuit of continuing her record-breaking feat, after finishing a disappointing seventh in the Class I discus last year.
"I am yet to reach my top form, but with Champs just three works away, I am putting in the extra work, and I will be ready for something special once again, as I want to set the pace for my team to win the overall title at Champs this year," she said.
On yesterday's first day of the two-day Central Champs, Williams established the first record of this year's staging with the 54.01 metres, enabling her to successfully defend the title. St Jago High's Abigail Martin finished second with 53.38 and Shanaea Richards of Clarendon College third with 46.70.
Williams, a former sprinter turned thrower, credits the depth of the Class I girls' discus for her record-breaking performance, which she attained on her fifth attempt yesterday.
"The competition from the other girls was very tough, which forced me to be at my very best. All season, I have been throwing 51 metres consistently and was determined to throw farther," she said.
