Diamond League wins for Gayle, Jackson
Jamaica's Tajay Gayle and Shericka Jackson were impressive winners at yesterday's Wanda Diamond League meet in Stockholm, Sweden.
Gayle, the 2019 Doha World Championships long jump champion, used his final effort to capture the event with a wind-assisted (2.3 metres per second) 8.55 metres. Juan Miguel Echevarria of Cuba who led up to the fifth round had to settle for second with 8.29m. Thobias Mantler of Sweden was third with a personal best 8.23m.
"I am surprised that I jumped so far but I am very pleased," Gayle said after his win.
Jackson again reminded her rivals that she will be among the main contenders in the sprints at the Tokyo Games with a strong finish in the women's 200 metres.
Marie Josee Ta Lou of Cote d'Ivoire led for most the way before Jackson found top gear in the final 50 metres to win going away in 22.10 seconds. Ta Lou clocked a season's best 22.36 seconds for second while Beatrice Masilingi of Namibia, who was recently banned from competing in the 400m by World Athletics, took third in a national record 22.65 seconds.
