Manchester's Gordon Bryan looks to make his mark
Having received his first call-up to the Jamaica Scorpion team to contest the regional Super 50 cricket tournament, Manchester native Gordon Bryan says he will try to make the most of his opportunities when he gets his chance to play.
"I don't want to go in there with any expectation and put myself under pressure," said the bowling all-rounder. "If I get my chance to prove my skills, I will just bowl in areas and let the ball do the work."
Gordon has been named in a 14-man squad which includes Christopher Gayle, Rovman Powell, Nikita Miller, Jermaine Blackwood and Andre McCarthy.
The 26-year-old, who is good with both bat and ball, prefers his job as a bowler.
"I am definitely looking to make my mark with both (bat and ball) in this competition ... . I would like to end the competition with 22 wickets and if everything goes well, then probably I can make the T20 team next," he said.
Bryan said the call-up to the national team was a big surprise for him.
"I was playing the 50 overs competition and took some wickets and I batted well, and the chairman of selectors told me to stay fit. But I didn't have it in mind. I was just putting in the work," he said.
The Scorpion's coach, Robert Samuels, is confident that Gordon will take his share of wickets in the upcoming tournament.
"The beauty about him is that he has a good skill set for a bowler. He has the requisite skills for a fast bowler to take wickets, and it's just for us to make him stronger so he can bowl for longer. He looks good, he looks as if he has some skills," Samuels said.
