Young Reggae Boyz almost safe
Jamaica's Under-17 team are virtually through to the second round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) under-17 qualifiers after scoring a 3-1 win over Antigua and Barbuda in their Group Four, top-of-the-table clash at the Lionel Roberts Park in the US Virgin Islands yesterday.
Captain Jeremy Verley and Kaheem Parris netted in the first-half and Raewin Senior added another in the second-half for his third goal of the tournament.
The win put the Andrew Edwards-coached team atop of the standings with maximum six points after two games, three ahead of Antigua and Barbuda.
The young Reggae Boyz must now lose their final game to bottom-of-the-table and host team US Virgin Islands by at least five goals tomorrow to be denied a place in next round.
However, the Jamaicans need only a point from their final game against the US Virgin islands to top the group and secure their passage to the next phase of the competition.
Edwards says they will remain focused until the job is complete.
"We don't want to get ahead of ourselves as if we are not careful we could 'buck' our toes and miss out on qualification, so we are well focus on seeing the job through," he said.
"We have USVI; they are the weakest team in the group and we should get the three points. We also want to give the kids who have not played an opportunity but we want to get the best team on the pitch and try and secure the result that will take us to Trinidad for the second phase of qualifiers in September," he added.
