Stewart stars as Portmore lift Sutherland KO title
Tremaine Stewart netted a goal in each half for Portmore United to score a comfortable 2-0 win over Bodles to claim the St Catherine Happy Sutherland Knockout title at the Spanish Town Prison Oval on Sunday.
The former Eltham High star opened the scoring after 34 minutes before sealing the win with a spectacular solo effort in the 69th minute. The diminutive attacker delighted spectators with a sublime goal after rounding the goalkeeper and two defenders before calmly slotting home his and his team's second goal of the night.
"I never expected to get the ball, but when I got it there was just one thing in mind and that was to go to goal, then I saw the goalkeeper advance so I knew I had to go around him," the former Waterhouse player told STAR Sports.
After going 2-0 up, Portmore coasted through the game, but Stewart said it was mainly to avoid injuries as they are focused on the Premier League.
"We weren't toying with them, they really could not match up with us, so it was a case of not getting injured because we have big Premier League games coming up. We didn't do anything we didn't want to do, so it was (like) a normal day of training, we just wanted to put away the team from early and we did that," he said.
'Tan Tan', as he is popularly called, spent time abroad in Norway with Aalesund and last season represented second-place finisher Rops in the Finnish Premier division, and the 28-year-old believes his contribution will be vital to Portmore winning their first title since 2012.
"It's surprising to many people that Portmore United are in the top four. Nobody expected us to drop out of the league and just come back up and be in the top four. We just have to keep our focus, take our training sessions serious and play for our fans, family and club," he added.
