Development was key - Lindo
St Catherine High School coach Lennox Lindo says winning the ISSA Southern Conference under-16 high-school basketball title proves that with a proper programme and the right application schools can still win trophies by developing their very own.
In recent time, recruiting and transferring of student/athletes have become a major part of the local high-school sports landscape, but Lindo, who led St Catherine High School's junior team to a 2-1 series win over St George's College following a 59-57 in game three of the final at the National Indoor Centre last Friday, says development can still lead you to titles.
"I am really proud of these guys because it has been a while they have been developing. It's about three, four years most of them are together, so it's good to know that development can still win championships," he said.
"The programme is really getting out and building them and they have come up gradually through the stages, so that is what I am really proud of. They came up through under-14 together, last year they lost in the under-16 semi-final and now this year the hard work has paid off," he told Star Sports.
half-time interval
In Friday's game three, the 'Georgians' were quick out of the blocks as they raced to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter and were comfortably ahead 23-16 at the half-time interval.
However, St Catherine turned the game around after the half-time break, outplaying and outscoring their opponent 23-13 to edge into a three-point lead going into the final quarter. The final period was keenly contest up until the final whistle with St George's taking the quarter 21-20, but in the end falling two points shy of their opponent's total.
Daniel Jones scored 21 points for St Catherine, followed by Swayveon Henry with 14 points and eight rebounds. Akeem Ellis top-scored for St George's with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Meanwhile, the Under-19 final will have to go a decisive Game Three after defending champion Calabar levelled the series 1-1 following a 57-52 win over Camperdown.
Shamar Shand with a game high 18 points and Maliek McCarthy with 13 points and 12 rebounds were Calabar's leading players. Kemar Hurd top-scored for Camperdown with 13 points.
Game Three takes place tomorrow at a venue to be decided.
