Hunt scholarship head seeks more awardees
Ahead of Saturday's David 'Wagga' Hunt Fundraising Ball in Washington, DC, Christopher Hunt, founder and chairman, said his committee would be looking to expand the initiative to more Jamaicans in the diaspora who would help raise more scholarship funds for Kingston College and Calabar High School students.
"Each year, we add two boys, one from Kingston College and one from Calabar. We used to have initiatives in New York and Florida, and we are hoping to revive those," Hunt told STAR Sports.
In September, Hunt said $1.3 million in scholarship presentations were made to students. A further 15 scholarships, worth $4.3 million, have been awarded over the past six years.
The scholarship period covers students from grade eight to grade 13 and is worth $600,000, which covers tuition, books, and lunch.
David Hunt, after whom the charity was named, was a veteran local football player and coach with more than 30 years' experience until his passing in 2007.
FIRST TITLE
Hunt, in 2005, after two years in charge, led Calabar High School to their first Manning Cup title in 28 years, as well as the Olivier Shield title.
This Saturday's scholarship ball, a red-carpet event, will be under the patronage of Jamaican Ambassador and Plenipotentiary to the United States His Excellency Ralph S. Thomas.
It is slated for the atrium of the National Education Association building at 1201 16th Street Northwest, Washington, DC, in the United States.
Howard University will be honoured for its contribution to higher education and nation building in the Caribbean.
