UWI moves to bolster line up
Debutants UWI FC continue to hold their own in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL).
With the league more than halfway into its regular season, UWI sports director Dalton Myers said they would be moving in the transfer window to bring in two top-class players to bolster the team's survival chances.
UWI have 23 points from 19 games and are eighth in the standings, trailing Reno on goal difference.
The club is rumoured to be in negotiations with out-of-favour national midfield play-maker Keammar Daley and former Jamaica College and ex-UWI striker Anthony Grant.
Myers would not confirm the names until the deals are completed, but admitted that two top-quality players will join the team, with one to start against Reno on Sunday.
"We have a target from overseas who should start the next game, so we want to get that right, but until we confirm, we cannot say much," said Myers.
He added that the players were Jamaican.
"One of them plays overseas. The other is here playing at one of the other clubs, but they are very tight discussions and we are working on it," he told STAR Sports.
Daley is currently contracted to Harbour View but has been woefully off form. Goal-scoring ace Grant is a former McKendree and Bowling Green State University player. He has played in the United Soccer League for Michigan Bucks and Seacoast United Phantoms before joining Richmond Kickers last year.
Both players will be expected to improve UWI's offence and goal-per-game ratio.
"We are the only team trying to figure out the best combination each match and every training session. We started the new year with a point after a 1-1 draw, which means we are scoring, and that is a good thing for us," said Myers.
