Pride at stake as second round concludes
Today's all-important Group K clash in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association ISSA-FLOW Manning Cup will see surprise leaders Jonathan Grant take on bottom-placed Calabar High for three precious points and a semi-final place at the Prison Oval in Spanish Town at 3 p.m.
Jonathan Grant need only a draw to advance. Excelsior High and Charlie Smith will lock horns, also at 3 p.m., at Constant Spring for three points. The winner of the encounter would go to six points with a chance to qualify, should Jonathan Grant lose.
"We will not be going for a draw because the prestige of a school like Calabar would not want a school like Jonathan Grant to beat them," said coach O'Neil Thomas.
"We gonna play for points as a nontraditional school because it wasn't by chance or luck that we reached this far. we planned, trained for it, and we won't give it away at this stage," he added.
"The best defence is attack, so the guys just have to be disciplined, score goals and win nine points," he said.
Jonathan Grant previously beat Excelsior 1-0 and downed another former champion, Charlie Smith, 2-0.
Calabar, however, have had a season to forget, beaten 2-1 by Charlie Smith and drubbed 5-1 by Excelsior.
Coach Bradley Stewart said Calabar will be looking to salvage some pride.
"We are out in terms of possibility for points. The only way they won't go through is if we beat them badly. I don't know if there is enough motivation in my players," he said.
"We have no fear, we just have to go out there and play for pride, because that's the Manning Cup - no team is gonna allow another team to go through easy. It is about bragging rights, and there is too much pride at stake," he added.
