Martial arts teacher and farmer Adisa Alexander, who had his life turned upside down in October 2020, when an unknown assailant pumped 33 bullets into his body, has been hit with more bad news.

His mother, Joan Alexander, has been his sole caregiver. Alexander's only prayer was that he would get well enough to care for his mother, whose sacrifice to care for him made him feel indebted to her. Unfortunately, he will not be able to repay her kindness, as she died on March 7. He is devastated by his mother's death. Besides not getting a chance to bid her goodbye, her passing has left him facing an uncertain future.

"She will be buried this Saturday and I am dreading the day," said a now-worried Alexander "Bwoy, it a stress mi out, and I am not normally stressed, but when mi see I can't even jump 'round and help with the funeral preparations, it mash up my meds."

The Gordon Town resident, whose legs had to be amputated because of the severity of the injuries he suffered from the shooting, which also includes a partially paralysed left arm, has been bedridden since the shooting. He was unable to see his mother in her final hours.

"I never get a chance to even see her, because she was hospitalised for about a week. I had to go to clinic the Thursday, so I was looking forward to see her, but she died the Wednesday night and mi not even get a chance to see her and say goodbye. I didn't get a chance to hug my mother and it hurt," he added.

Alexander told THE STAR that although he knew his mother was extremely ill, he was praying earnestly that she would recover and return home.

"She had bedsores, and it gave her infection in her blood. She got sepsis, and it killed her. I feel bad because I couldn't do anything to help her. She was just lying down on her bed, and I was on mine, and I couldn't help," he lamented. "Mi did just a pray to get back mi independence so mi could help her and mi two daughter dem. Everything just change."

Most of Alexaner's days are spent alone at home, laying on his bed. Occasionally, he gets a visitor. At nights, his two daughters keep his company.

"I know I will not be able to walk again, but I want to just get back some independence so I can care for my children. Life just changed in the blink of an eye, and right now it's just my faith that I have to be relying on for survival," said a reflective Alexander. "All of this that was done to me has changed me forever, but I have forgiven my attackers."

Alexander was shot at a shop in Tavern, St Andrew where he stopped to shelter as it was raining. Tavern is the adjoining community to his Gordon Town hometown. The bullets that have robbed the 43-year-old of the independence he once enjoyed, caused major damage to his back, hip, legs and hands. He is now seeking the assistance of the public to address some of his needs.
