Mom seeks help for son living with scoliosis
Raymond Campbell's biggest dream is to become a policeman, but the youngster is currently suffering from spinal condition scoliosis that could alter his lifelong goal.
His mother, Margaret Thomas, is therefore seeking the public's assistance in obtaining the $1.4 million that is needed for a surgery at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) this November. "We were told that if he does not get the surgery, he may be forced to be a wheelchair user for the rest of his life. Although he is just 14 years old, he is very passionate about growing up and playing his part in fighting injustice in this country. Please help us to reach the target. We are doing fundraisers and so on, but we would really appreciate the assistance," Thomas said. According to Thomas, Raymond, who lives in Mandeville, Manchester, was living a normal life until late last year.
"He was going to school and when I looked at him, I realised his back look 'funny'. When he came home I checked it again and realised that his back just didn't look normal. He wasn't feeling any pain or so on but his father and I took him to the doctor. He was referred to Mandeville Hospital, who referred him to KPH, and that was where we were told that he had scoliosis," she said. Raymond attends Victor Dixon High School in Manchester, but Thomas said that he will not be attending classes next month as his condition has worsened.
A GoFundMe account that has been created to assist with the teenager's medical expenses has raised US$1,310 of the US$10,000 goal.
Aside from persons contributing to the cause, the family will also be hosting a cookout and day rave on August 22 to raise funds for the operation.
