The first thing that will readily catch your attention at Farquhar Beach is the black sand along the shoreline and the crystal-clear water. This spot, located in Clarendon, is one of Jamaica’s hidden treasures.

Getting to the beach, located near Milk River, is a rocky ride as the roads in the area are in a poor state. It will take you just under an hour from the Mineral Heights roundabout to get to the destination. However, the rocky roads may be quickly forgotten once the aroma of seafood hits your nostrils.

When THE WEEKEND STAR visited the beach recently, there was very little activity taking place. But, according to Jah D, operator of Dean’s Place, the atmosphere is quite the opposite on public holidays and weekends.

“It’s a very unique spot, and I think it is OK the way it is. In reality, if the Government try develop it, man like me nah go have nuh work, because them may take way the spot that mi have yah so. It’s a nice spot and is about three years mi a run it off. Mi fadda did have it, but mi take over when him pass off. So right now, on weekends is when mi make good sale because people come buy fish and dem tings deh. More time the place full a tourists and locals,” he said.

Although it was once rumoured that persons would visit the destination to participate in the drug and gun trade, Jah D says Farquhar Beach is perfectly safe. He also said that he is unaware of the beach being used for any such activities.

“Round here safe, enuh. The stretch may sometimes seem lonely, but everyone from this side is a peaceful set,” he said.

While Jah D sat with his friends at his shop, an elderly couple, visiting the beach for the first time, said they couldn’t help but stare at the crystal-clear water.

“It reminded me a lot of the Atlantic Ocean, and for a while, I actually thought it was. This place is very beautiful, and I believe it should stay just the way it is – no addition, nothing,” the woman said.
