Dancers Paradise: Dancehall Dabb upset hip hop fans
Singjay Mr Vegas recently released the music video for his new dance single, 'Dancehall Dabb'.
The video was meant to pay homage to the popular Dab dance created in the United States. However, it has been met with severe backlash from Americans who claim the Bruck It Dung hitmaker had ruined the dance.
The music video for Dancehall Dabb was directed by acclaimed video director TY Black and was premiered by World Star Hip Hop.
However, instead of commenting on the quality of the video, as well as the choreographed dance moves, hip hop fans bashed Mr Vegas.
Many viewers claimed the Dab move was being hijacked by the artiste. Others complained about Mr Vegas' decision to spell dab as 'Dabb'.
"RIP DAB you lived a short successful life," one viewer posted.
Another wrote: "The song sucks but the white girl can marry me."
The negative comments continued: "Why call it World Star Hip Hop when most of the music is shi@@y trap and then they upload shi@@y ass dancehall."
And "Why these Jamaicans tryna copy Migos' Dab?. Stick to yall Wheeliebounce' or whatever it's called."
While many of the negative comments were posted by foreigners, persons from the Caribbean defended Vegas. They also encouraged the American fans to research the origins of rap and hip hop music before disrespecting dancehall.
"Brother I guess you don't know where hip hop came from. It started from Jamaica dancehall music. Why you think all the old-school musicians used to always do some type of Jamaican flow in their songs? Another negro lost without knowing his history," one person responded.
Another lent her support, posting "... song badd, rhythm bad, video bad ... keep your negative comments to unno self".
Vegas said he had decided to create a dancehall version of the Dab move, because Americans have, themselves, recreated Jamaican moves on numerous occasions.
"I know a lot of people might be wondering why I have recorded a song about an American dance move. Over the past few years, American artistes have been doing videos that highlight Jamaican dance moves, just look at the dance moves in Justin Bieber's song called Sorry. All dancers in that video are doing Jamaican dance moves, I am just reversing the roles," Vegas said.
Dab was popularised in the US by rap group the Migos. However, others have claimed to be originators.
