‘I am the Usain Bolt’ - McGregor vows to anchor PNP to victory in Kgn Central

January 17, 2025

Retired Senior Superintendent of Police Steve McGregor has likened his entry into the Kingston Central race to anchoring an Olympic relay team.

"The team that qualifies the relay for the finals is not normally the team that runs in the final ... but when the team wins the finals, everybody on the team gets gold medal," McGregor declared.

"I am the Usain Bolt anchoring the relay. When we get that medal, there is a medal for everyone, to include Comrade Rowe, if he still is on the love train," McGregor said, acknowledging his predecessor, Lawrence Rowe, who was removed just last week.

Unveiled as the People's National Party (PNP) candidate for the next general election, McGregor wasted no time setting the tone for unity, pledging to mend fences with Rowe and rebuild the party's strength in the constituency.

"I'm going to make the effort to sit and speak with him," McGregor said, in reference to the disaffected Rowe. "I want to say thanks to Comrade Rowe for holding the seat for me until I came here."

Traditionally a secure seat for the PNP, Kingston Central fell to the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) Donovan Williams in the last general election. Williams defeated Imani Duncan-Price by 303 votes, securing 4,568 votes to Duncan-Price's 4,265.

However, the PNP appears to be turning its fortunes around, based on the results of the local government elections last year. In that election, the party led the JLP by 541 votes. It secured the Allman Town Division by 909 votes (2,281 to 1,372), but fell behind in the Rae Town Division, losing by 368 votes (2,168 to 1,800).

PNP President Mark Golding described McGregor as "a man of quality" and "a man of performance".

"Steve has shown what he can do already, and he is moving into a new realm of service to you," Golding said.

If elected MP, McGregor plans to implement monthly community projects under a "round-robin initiative", where each of the nine communities in the constituency will host events to raise funds for local projects. "We are going to build the vibes," he said.
