Determined student needs help to finish college
Shalise Sterling is a student at the University of Technology (UTech) who aspires to become a dental technician.
As a lover of medicine, she said that she wanted to do dentistry, but financial constrains propelled her in a new direction that she has not regretted.
To make herself more marketable and to add flavour to her work, she decided to add a little technology to it.
As determined as Sterling is, the years at UTech have not been kind to her financially, but she is willing to make as much effort as possible so that she can reach her goal.
"I am in my third year of college, and it has not been easy. My mom is not working at this moment, and my dad is not in the picture. So, it's really hard, but I am pressing on," she said.
As the only child for her mother, Sterling depends on her to get things in place, but the 21-year-old said that they have fallen on hard times.
With the school fee at $293,000 per year, she said that her mother has been her tower of strength in the tough times that they have faced.
She said that the time spent at university has only been possible because of kind persons around her.
"I got help from a family friend in my first year, but since she got ill, things have been going slow. In year two my mom borrowed money from the credit union, so she has that paying for now, and I was unable to get student loan because I have no one to stand as my guarantor," she said.
Realising her dreams are slipping out of her hands, Sterling has decided to ask for help from the wider public. She said that the thought of turning back while she is so close to the finish line is very devastating.
"If I cannot complete the next two years, it would really stress me out to come this far and have to turn back. It would hurt me emotionally and mentally because I'm focused. I know what I want and I'm going for it," she said.
