TUNDABOLT clothing is off and running
For decades, Lorna Bagwandeen has been a familiar face in Jamaica's horse racing industry.
From breeding the animals to training them, she and her family have been deeply involved in the sport since the 1980s. But now, at 56, she's stepping onto a new stage and into the fashion world.
Launching today on her birthday at the Club House Brewry, Bagwandeen's new clothing line, TUNDABOLT 'where fashion runs wild', is inspired by the very sport that has shaped her life. The collection, designed for both horse racing professionals and fans, aims to bring style and identity to an industry she feels has been overlooked in fashion.
"We've been in horse racing for over 40 years, and I realised there was nothing out there that truly represents the industry in a stylish way," Bagwandeen told THE STAR. "So I decided to create something myself."
Despite juggling her long-standing role in the racing world, she is hands-on with the designs, from concept to production.
"I'm doing most of the work," she admitted. "This is something I'm passionate about because horse racing is such a big part of my life, and I want to create something that reflects that." The line will start with sportswear, using cotton and jersey fabrics, but Bagwandeen has plans to expand into casualwear and even children's clothing.
"It's all about making something that people in the industry can wear with pride," she explained.
Though Bagwandeen is the driving force behind the designs, her daughter, Geeta Bagwandeen, plays a key role in shaping the brand.
"She's my advisor," Bagwandeen said proudly of her daughter. "She helps me decide what designs will work best, what people will like. It's great having her input because she has a real eye for style."
Even before the official launch, the line has already started gaining attention. Some pieces have been sent overseas as part of a trial run, and the feedback has been encouraging. Running a fashion line while being active in horse racing might sound overwhelming, but, for Bagwandeen, it comes naturally.
"I have a lot of drive," she said. "When you're passionate about something, you make the time. I don't see obstacles, I just see what needs to get done." Bagwandeen opined that determination is the key to success, especially for young designers in Jamaica.
"We have so much talent here, but sometimes people doubt themselves before they even try," she said. "If you have an idea, go for it. Don't wait for the perfect moment, just start. And surround yourself with people who support your vision, because the right encouragement can make all the difference."
Bagwandeen has big dreams for TUNDABOLT and she's confident that the racing community will embrace it.
"I want to see everyone in the industry wearing these designs with pride. This is more than just clothing, it's a representation of the sport we love." And she's not stopping there.
"I want this brand to go beyond Jamaica. Wherever horse racing is, we want to be there too."
