It has been one year and eight months since St Thomas resident Doreen Kirby died at age 56, and her family members said that they are yet to get closure, as her cause of death remains a mystery.

Kirby's daughter, Vashti Samuels, who spoke on behalf of the family, said they are looking for closure with an autopsy result since her mother did not have any known illnesses.

"On the day of the autopsy, we were there waiting to hear what was our mother's cause of death but the results were inconclusive," she said. "They told us they couldn't find out what killed her and they were going to take some blood tissues to test at the government forensic lab. We have been waiting on the result since. We have made lots of calls to check on the results but we haven't heard anything. We have not been resting well since she passed because her death came as a surprise to everyone."

Got a stroke

According to Samuels, she last spoke to her mother just hours before her death on January 16, 2018, and was shocked when she was told that she may have got a stroke and was rushed to hospital.

"My mother was fine all day. She came to buy load with the intention of going to town to sell another day, and, at about 12, we spoke to each other because she was not the type to go to her bed and don't speak to her children. About two hours later, I got a call from a relative to say that it appeared that my mother got a stroke and was rushed to the hospital but by the time I got there she was dead," Samuels said

According to Samuels, the police said they did not see any sign of foul play, but they still needed closure.

"We would still want to know what killed her because as far as we know, she was a healthy woman. I am asking the lab that has the blood tissues to just speed it up a bit. If we knew it was going to take this long, we would have just tried to find the money and do an independent autopsy," she said.
