‘Justice for Jodian’ campaign gathers steam - GoFundMe account launched to help legal fight
The fight for justice continues for the family of the late Jodian Fearon and will exceed merely contesting any potential legal settlements arising from her untimely death.
A foundation created in her honour will also be set up to keep her legacy alive and provide solace for the family.
Portia Green-Haughton, Fearon's mother, told THE STAR that her daughter's name would be an armour for persons who use the public health care system.
"The tag line 'Justice for Jodian' will mean justice for every Jamaican who uses the public healthcare system or even the creation of a law to ensure this doesn't happen again to another young mother," she said.
The Jodian Fearon Foundation, which will be launched over the course of the next two months, will also provide young women with scholarships and grants.
"The paperwork is being drafted for the foundation so once we settle off with burial, it will be our main focus. We will be giving scholarships and grants especially to Holy Childhood High School and the University of the West Indies where Jodian went to," Green-Haughton said. "Establishing a foundation in memory of her is one of the many ways we are seeking to preserve her legacy and also to support the passion she had for education."
Hefty legal fees
She stressed that the foundation is non-profit, and will be registered locally and also in the US.
With regards to the funds to be raised from the GoFundMe account that was launched yesterday, Green-Haughton expressed that the primary focus is to cover hefty legal fees during the fight, and, if possible, to assist with setting up the foundation.
"As you would imagine, legal fees are well expensive and we want to ensure that we get the best course of justice," she said. "We have already started planning for the foundation so whatever the funds raised, some of it will also go towards the foundation but we plan on doing fundraisers to help us with that."
Since the US$20,000 account was launched, it has since raised more than US$3,000 in donations.
The appreciative Green-Haughton expressed her many thanks to the persons who have been following the Justice for Jodian campaign.
"There are persons overseas doing their own advocacy. A lot of persons from Florida, New York, and Atlanta have printed shirts with the tag line Justice for Jodian, and persons have been reaching and saying they want to help the movement and I am so grateful for the support."
She added, "This is a fight for justice and what we need is the truth and justice for Jodian and justice in the sense that her legacy stays alive."
