Ten young and intelligent fourth-form students of the Hopewell High School in Hanover were sashed and set on their way to rigorously compete for the coveted tile of Miss Hopewell High.

They were sashed by their respective sponsors during a ceremony held at the school's multipurpose hall recently and will now travel across Hanover and western Jamaica promoting their institution as one of the preferred schools in the parish and region.

According to Latoya Corke, a member of the organising committee, the Miss Hopewell pageant is being held for the second time and is being used as a means to promote the school as a place that parents can feel comfortable to send their children.

She said that the event is also being used to expose the contestants to what life would be like at the tertiary level outside of high schools.

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

"The staging of Miss Hopewell High will be used to develop in each of the student contestants self-confidence, self-awareness, cultural awareness as well as exposing these ladies to opportunities that they would not normally be in as a student," Corke told WESTERN STAR.

She added that they would be doing community service over the period leading up to the grand coronation show set for Wednesday, April 17, on the school compound.

The finalists are Reanna Kerr, 16, Miss Lee's Hardware; Natelege Mundle, 16, Miss Williams Farming; Beyonce Miller, 15, Miss A.C. Records; Tresona Gardner, 15, Miss Suan's Unique Design; Deon Brown, 15, Miss Joint Restaurant; Breanna Frame, 16, Miss Kerry Care Foundation; Keisha Reid, 16, Miss Hart and Sons Financial Services; Ashanti Rankine, 15, Miss Stanford and Son photo and video services; Deanna Cunningham, 16, Miss Great River Construction; and Shantae Bowell, 16, Miss Nectar Love.
