WI Champions fall to South Africa in WLC opener
BIRMINGHAM, England (CMC):
South Africa Champions edged West Indies Champions in a rare bowl-out after the two teams played to a thrilling tie in their rain-affected World Championship of Legends (WLC) contest here on Saturday.
Led by knocks of 28 from Lendl Simmons and 27 from Chadwick Walton, West Indies Champions posted a competitive 79 for five in a match that was reduced to 11 overs due to persistent showers.
Aaron Phangiso was the pick of South Africa's bowlers with 2-19 from his three overs.
Set a revised target of 81 for victory via the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern method, West Indies seemed on track for victory when they reduced their opponents to 50 for four at the end of eight overs.
However, Jean-Paul Duminy smashed 25 from 12 balls with two sixes and one four to get them within one run of victory.
But fast bowler Fidel Edwards grabbed two wickets off consecutive deliveries in the final over to restrict South Africa to 80 for six in their 11 overs.
Sheldon Cottrell took 2-16, while Edwards ended with 2-21.
With a bowl-out required to determine the winner, South Africa hit the stumps twice, while West Indies missed all five of their attempts to lose the bowl-out 2-0.
