Another Nunes upsetter rocks Reggae 6
ANTHONY Nunes rocked the Reggae 6 for a second consecutive week, forcing a payout of $516,822 after closing last Saturday's $906,823 payout with GOLDEN SYRUP, who pulled off a stunning reversal of form at odds of 23-1.
Nunes, who leads champion Jason DaCosta in the trainers' stakes race, was at it again, PRINCE AMAAN turning tables on MACK AND ROME to win the second event at odds of 19-1.
After posting a three-timer the previous Saturday, Nunes appears to be making good on his projections to regain the crown he lost to his rival in 2023.
Outsped by MACK AND ROME when the speedster was caught at the exact trip of six furlongs on February 8, PRINCE AMAAN was surprisingly within striking distance coming off the home turn after a sweeping move took him three-wide while MS CHERRY rode the rail with her challenge.
Quickening on the outside, PRINCE AMAAN led a furlong and a half out under Reyan Lewis and powered in clear of late-running RICHES TO RAGS, anther rival on whom he turned tables after finishing down the track when last out at five furlongs straight on March 1.
MILOS winning the opening event at 5-2 was no surprise, drawn at post-position eight with back-class to boot. MONSTER VIGOROUS was always a must-carry in the third, getting home at odds of 5-2.
HONOUR PRINCE wore down speedster ANOTHER ONE to win the six-furlong Sir Howard Stakes at odds of 6-1 ahead of late-charging PRINCE ROY, a race that was bound to result in a collapsing pace.
BIG BUZZ won the fifth as the 4-5 favourite before the STAR's Reggae 6 preview rang true in the sixth, warning that GOD OF LOVE appeared too good to be true, dropping from a $1 million claiming tag to $500,000.
RUSTY beat the former crack sprinter by three-quarter length, crashing bets of punters, who failed to heed "as tempting as GOD OF LOVE might appear, dropping from $1 million claiming to $500,000, spread bets all about."
Meanwhile, COMMANDANT, third on debut as a foreign invader in December's Grade One US$250,000 Mouttet Mile, won his second straight race, slamming open-allowance runners by five lengths on way to clocking a fast 1:24.2 at seven furlongs in the Alexander Hamilton Memorial Trophy
