Clayton twins shine at All Comers meet
SEVERAL junior athletes warmed up for this week's four-day National Senior and Junior Championships with good performances at last Saturday's JAAA All Comers meet inside the National Stadium.
Edwin Allen High's twins, Tina and Tia Clayton, and schoolmate Bryan Levell, had good results in the 100 and 200 metres.
In the junior girls' 100m, Tina, after a close battle with Tia for 90m, found extra in the last 10m to win the event in 11.71 seconds. Tia, who was disqualified in the Class Two event at last month's ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships, took second in 11.83, while G.C. Foster College's Michae Harriott was third in 11.93. The athletes competed in a negative wind speed of 2.2 metres per second .
Levell continued his good form in the sprints this season when he won the 200m in 20.67 seconds. MVP Track Club's Andel Miller was second in 20.94, ahead of Raheim Scott of JAAA Youths in 21.43.
Petersfield High's Antonio Watson also had a good win on the day. Running against a minus 3.9 metres per second wind, Watson stopped the clock at 10.69 in the 100m to win his heat and the overall event. St Catherine High's Sandrey Davidson, who won his heat in 10.79 in a negative 2.5 metres per second wind, was the runner-up, while Jahlani Gordon of Wolmer's Boys' took third in 10.81.
An impressive win
Rusea's High's Aaliyah Francis, the Girls' Champs Class One double sprint champion, representing JAAA Youths, had an impressive win in the 200m. The University of Auburn-bound athlete captured the event in 23.77. St Catherine HIgh's Annakaye Maitland, 24.61, and Joanna Reid of St Jago High (25.01) were second and third, respectively.
In the women's 100m hurdles, G.C. Foster College's Shanette Allison took the win in 13.63 seconds in a match race with Melanie Walker, the 2008 Olympic 400m hurdles champion. Walker was second in 14.10. Allison's teammate, Ashley Williams, won the women's 400m in 52.95 seconds.
G.C. Foster's Akani Slater also won the men's 400m in 46.39. Jeremy Bembridge (47.17) of Jamaica Youths and Holmwoood Technical's Tahj Hamm (47.46) ended second and third, respectively.
In the field events, former national high jump champion Kimberly Williamson warmed up for her clash this week with NCAA Outdoor Division One silver medallist Lamara Distin with a win in her pet event. Williamson cleared 1.89m. Shantea Foreman, the Girls' Champs Class One high and long jump winner, was second with 1.80m.
Holmwood Technical's Cedricka Williams was victorious in the girls' discus with a distance of 49.31 metres. Ralford Mullings and Lushane Wilson also had good results. Mullings, competing for JAAA Youths, won the men's' discus with a throw of 59. 99m, while Wilson of G.C. Foster captured the high jump with a leap of 2.20m.
