Kalawan siblings flying Lennox Bigwoods flag high
Shannon Kalawan brought joy to her community of Lennox Bigwoods, Westmoreland, at the just-concluded Penn Relays when she won the women’s 400m hurdles with a season’s best of 57.37 seconds.
Shannon is a former Edwin Allen High School standout, who hails from Lennox Bigwoods in eastern Westmoreland. Her talent took her to Frankfield in Clarendon where she competed at the Boys and Girls’ Championships. She is now a junior athlete at Saint Augustine’s University in the United States.
“I am so happy for Shannon. She trained very hard to achieve her victory at the Penn Relays. I didn’t see the race, but she sent me pictures of her victory and the time that she ran,” Novelette Kalawan, Shannon’s mother, told the WESTERN STAR.
This is the second consecutive year that Shannon has won the prestigious Penn Relays.
Her brother, Sean Kalawan, who went to Petersfield High School, in Westmoreland, also won a medal at ‘Penns’.
Like his sister, Sean finished his high school sporting career at Edwin Allen. He then won a scholarship to attend the Saint Augustine’s University.
Together, the Kalawan siblings have placed their Lennox Bigwoods community on the sporting map.
