I can't take another flood - Blocked drains worry Weymouth Drive resident
Devon Moore has been a resident of the Weymouth Drive community in St Andrew for the past 16 years, and he has had his fair share of flooding.
Moore told THE WEEKEND STAR that many times, he has had to move his furniture and even get help from neighbours to get water out of his house.
"It rough yah so because more while as little rain fall, a problem. The last time mi get flood out, people from in the community had to come and use bucket and carry water out a me house. Mi have some blocks weh mi use and put mi furniture dem pan, and even then, sometimes dem get wet," he said.
He said that the flooding is due to the blocked drains at the entrance to the community when one enters from Spanish Town Road.
The 55-year-old said that even during Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, the area did not experience flooding because the gully was clear.
"Mi grow one a me children here, and it wasn't that bad. Gilbert did rough, and me never flood out so," he said.
Moore said that at present, he is praying that it does not rain for long because he is at risk of losing his belongings.
He said that he hoped that the Government would hear his cry and clean the drains before things get worse.
"Mi house flood out so bad that I had to take out my furniture and clean them and have to get them spray over because water damage them and dem did full a mud. At this time, if the drain clean, things woulda be much better, but look how the sky black. Dem supm deh mek mi fret," he said.
While acknowledging that people in the community and surrounding areas are to be blamed for the flooding, he is appealing to the authorities for help.
"A wi fi tek care a the place, enuh, because a we it a affect, but me a ask the Government please to clean the drain before the rain come. Mi cya tek another flooding," he said.
