Isat Buchanan awaits collab ‘after freeing Kartel’
Attorney-at-law and reggae artiste Isat Buchanan promises to undertake a full-on musical career while practising law, as he anticipates the release of his collaboration with Vybz Kartel.
"There is gonna be more music. After I free Vybz Kartel, I am gonna put out the song that I have with him; I'm waiting on that. I already have the song but I won't do anything with it unless he [Kartel] is in the video. So when that happens later this year, then I'll go and do that. I am excited musically. Music is my happy place and I know that's the direction I'm heading right now. I won't abandon the music even though I'm still allowed to practise my law," he told THE WEEKEND STAR.
"I'm also excited to work with Queenie. I came to the UK at the same time Queenie left for Jamaica for Sting but when I catch up with her, I'm gonna get her in the studio and I'm gonna work with her on a song titled Bad Bad Everything," said Buchanan.
He shared the inspiration behind his recent single All in Life to last year's incident involved himself and Director of Public Prosecutions, Paula Llewellyn. Buchanan was found guilty of professional misconduct for offensive comments he directed at Llewellyn. He pleaded guilty to breaching ethics rules that guide the conduct of attorneys authorised to practise in Jamaica. He quoted lyrics from Vybz Kartel's song Menace in which he directed that Llewellyn perform a sexual act.
"The inspiration I got was that you have to take the good with the bad and keep your head up no matter what. As long as you're alive, you have hope," said Buchanan. "We can use words to do harm and I do appreciate that but you can also use words to make a positive impact and that song was in direct response to my experience".
He said he is encouraged to propel to higher heights musically, as the single, which garnered thousands of views and several positive comments on YouTube, is doing well.
He also clarified what was reportedly handed down as a "two-year suspension" from his law practice.
"I'm not on a two-year break. The legal counsel did give me a two-year suspension but I appealed it and on the 15th of December the court granted me a stay and said it was excessive - so I'm allowed to practise. The court will hear the matter ... so I'm practising until then and keeping my fingers crossed that justice will be served. I'll still be doing the music regardless," he stated.
Though his father is reggae icon Big Youth, Buchanan said he is not in the industry to gain success "through nepotism", but through his own hard work and merit, as he looks forward to performing at major shows, both local and international. He is also open to working with other artistes who would be interested in collaborating with him while he also branches off into hosting his own show on Reggae Global Radio.
In addition to his previous EP, Lovers Rock, the reggae singer is set to release another EP this year which will feature the collaboration with Vybz Kartel and also a single with his brother titled Fall in Love. Some of his other singles include That's Cool, featuring Big Youth and Unbreakable.
